Fragmentary Devotions

The objects of my work’s affection were discovered abandoned and unnoticed.  It seems that each sat neglected in quiet solitude until my careful attention revived old memories and purposes.  These paintings focus on ostensibly insignificant objects – stale marzipans, deflated balloons, discarded toys – but offer a still moment of deeper reflection.  I collect and cherish these trinkets as a child would collect a pebble or a colored piece glass, and view them as moments of vivid clarity as I proceed through my mundane and ordinary life.

This notion of putting discarded objects into the spotlight parallels my idea of envisioning and practicing art.  Whenever I can gather any moments of time – a scattered few minutes here or there that may seem insignificant in between the bustling personas that I take on – I engage it to achieve greater perspective.
